The 11th Day of Christmas – Mayan Hot Chocolate!

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas I prepare Mayan Hot Chocolate for my family. We love sitting around the fire and sipping this decadent spicy-hot chocolate treat. It’s spicy hot so it’s not for kids.  So, I’ve included Peppermint Hot Chocolate Recipe for them!

Darcy flynn romancesMAYAN HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS

2/3 cup whole milk

1/3 cup heavy cream

3 tablespoons instant hot chocolate mix (Choose a really good brand, like William-Sonoma)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 pinch cayenne pepper

 

Mix the hot chocolate mix, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper together in a mug.
Pour the milk into a glass measuring cup; heat in microwave on High until it begins to boil, about 2 minutes. Slowly pour over the mixture in the mug, stirring with a small whisk as you pour. Enjoy immediately.

 

PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATEdarcy flynn romances

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
3 drops peppermint oil
Sweetened whipped cream, for garnish
Chocolate shavings, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
In a saucepan, combine the cream, milk, sugar, and salt and heat over medium-low heat. When the cream mixture just begins to steam, add the chopped chocolate, and stir, until melted. Stir in the peppermint oil. Divide the hot chocolate among mugs and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

The 10th Day of Christmas – Memories & Traditions and Linda O’Connor!

On the Tenth Day of Christmas  I’d like to share one of my favorite Christmas darcyflynnromacnes.commemories. Growing up, Christmas for me and my family was always on Christmas Eve. My father would take my older brothers and I out to see the lights. The night time, the old fashion, multi-colored lights and the anticipation of what was to come were simply magical. An hour later we’d arrive home to find that Santa had come and gone! And there under the tree were all of our toys.

For years, I wondered how in the world Santa could know we’d be out. LOL!  Then, on Christmas morning we’d leave around 4 am to drive from New Orleans to Albany, Georgia. I’d wake up a few hours before we arrived at my grandparent’s house. I adored my grandmother and with my cousins a short block away, I couldn’t think of any other place else I’d rather be on Christmas Day! I’ll always treasure those magic years!

About the Author

I’ve been writing for three years, and I’m thrilled that Soul Mate Publishing will be publishing my latest novel, Perfectly Honest.I love reading romantic comedies so naturally that’s what I write. I never aspired to be a writer, but now I’m addicted. I love it. I balance writing with my work as a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic and being a mom to three sons (luckily grown and capable of throwing together a decent meal, in a pinch). Plus I like to keep active and cycle, cross-country ski, skate, walk with my husband, or dance every day.The idea to write came after working with young adults. There were some basics I thought they should know – mental health symptoms, birth control myths, how to take ownership of their health. I thought hey, if David Chilton of The Wealthy Barber fame can dole out financial advice in a barbershop, maybe I could dole out medical advice in a Romance novel. That’s how my first novel, She’s Not a Fan, was born.

For many years, I taught clinical skills to medical students and spent a lot of time writing detailed roles for actor-patients. It was great practice for developing characters in my stories. Joining the Romance Writers of America, taking online workshops, (and reading) all helped improve my writing. Medical school was challenging, but it was nothing compared to figuring out where commas go, POV, or sorting out verb tense (simple past, past perfect, past perfect progressive – did they know there were 25 other letters they could have used to name those things?)

Obviously I’m still learning, but I love the process.

I don’t write about people I know, but I definitely take inspiration from snippets of conversations or from the emotion I feel when I talk to people. My designated writing space is any place with a view of Lake Ontario, preferably outside (for three of the four seasons).

The 9th Day of Christmas – Dessert and Author Ann Lacey!

On the Ninth Day of Christmas I make my husband’s favorite cake! His mom gave me this recipe when I married her son 41 years ago. She told me it was his favorite and I’ve been making it ever since!

1 box white cake mix

1 (3-ounce) box strawberry-flavored instant jello

1 (15-ounce) package frozen strawberries in syrup, thawed and pureed

4 large eggs

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup water

Ingredients for strawberry cream cheese frosting.

1/4 cup butter, softened

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1 (10-ounce) package frozen strawberries in syrup, thawed and pureed

7 cups confectioners’ sugar

Freshly sliced strawberries, for garnish, optional

 

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease 2 (9-inch) round cake pans.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix and Jello mix. Add pureed strawberries, eggs, oil, and water. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Pour into greased and flowered pans, and bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let cool in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.

While cake is cooling-beat butter and cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Beat in 1/4 cup of the strawberry puree. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar, beating until smooth. Spread frosting in between layers and on top and sides of cake. Garnish with sliced fresh strawberries, if desired.

Note: For a festive change you can add ½ cup chopped nuts and ½ cup shaved coconut to the cake batter before baking if desired.

About the Author

I spent much of my life in New Jersey but have also lived in Florida and Wyoming. I currently reside in the lake region of central North Carolina. Living close to water, there are days when fog rolls in off the lake and creates an eerie mist. I love it but my dog, Molly, takes one look and refuses to leave the house.

When I’m not writing I read (lately with the help of a powerful pair of readers). For me there’s nothing better than a good who-done- it or a steamy romance! On rainy days, I enjoy watching old movies especially film noir and I can spend hours in an antique store.

I have recently moved to North Carolina and I’m delighted to say that southern hospitality truly exists!

Sam could tell she was spitting mad. He watched her jerk the seatbelt over her chest several times before he reached over to click it into place.
He straightened up and glanced at her as he turned into the street. “Is that steam I see coming from your ears?”
Kit responded by snapping her arms across her chest.
He heaved a sigh and shook his head. “She told you, didn’t she?”
Kit didn’t say a word she just stared out the window.
“I’m sorry you had to find out that way. I was going to stop by tonight and tell you myself.”
“How thoughtful of you. So. What do you want?”
“Sorry?”
“For access to the land. Otherwise my guests have no place to hunt or fish.”
“Sell me the road frontage I need.” He’d deliberately forced her hand and hated himself for it. But far better for her to part with a few measly acres than lose everything. And if she ended up hating him in the process then so be it. He cursed both their fathers under his breath.
Kit’s mouth fell open and she slowly turned to face him, hoarse laughter tumbling from her lips.
“You’ve got to be kidding. After this stunt, do you really think I’d sell an inch of my property to you? One Kendall made the mistake of caving to a Dawson’s blackmail, but let me assure you, this one won’t.”
He hated what he was about to do. Hated to force her hand, but she gave him no choice. When did she become so stubborn? Gritting his teeth, he continued.
“Then I won’t allow you to use the Lowman property for access. You’ll be forced to shut down. Sage Brush will close. You’ll be through. You’ll lose your property to the bank when they foreclose. Then it’ll only be a matter of time before I have it all anyway. Is that really what you want?”
“Why you no good, conniving, lowlife.”
“Look at it this way, if I get the road frontage I need, then you get to stay in business. It’s a win-win.”
They slowed to a stop outside of her house.
Kit opened the truck door then turned to face him.
“You would actually do that? You’d put Trip and Jake out of work? And what about Maggie? Have you even thought of her?”
“I told you, you wouldn’t like it.”

I just finished reading Christmas Journey by my friend and fellow sweet romance author, Patricia Kiyono.

Truly a must read for the holidays! Add it to your Wish List!

Here’s my review!

Christmas Journey, a delightful and heartwarming Christmas story is not only inspirational, but also highly entertaining. Miss Kiyono’s casts of characters literally jump off the page and into your heart. I fell in love with Mike Sikkema from the beginning. He is the perfect hero for the beautiful and lovely widow, Helen DeGroot.

I really identified with Helen in so many ways. Her son’s ‘litany of criticisms’ made me smile, especially where it concerned ‘all her stuff’! Hum…sounded a lot like conversations at my house. J I also loved seeing a second chance at romance blossom between this beautiful middle-aged woman and single, never been married, handsome man.

I found Miss Kiyono’s insights on how each generation views ‘aging’, both poignant and relative. She’s woven together certain inevitable truths about life and aging with heartwarming humor. You’ll not only be touched, but you’ll laugh out loud, and you’ll smile a lot.

This story is about family relationships, and romance and how, ‘happily ever after’ is never too late.
